Thinking about saying “I do” at an all-inclusive resort in Mexico or the Caribbean but not sure if a destination wedding is the right fit?
Hi, I’m Jodi—a destination wedding travel agent who works with couples to plan weddings at all-inclusive resorts by handling the travel details so they can focus on what matters most.
I put together this post to help you get a better sense of what having a destination wedding is really like, so you can decide if it feels right for you and your celebration.

Should I Have a Destination Wedding? Pros, Cons, and What To Expect
Quick answer: A destination wedding can be a great fit if you're looking for a more intimate, relaxed celebration in a beautiful setting—often at a lower cost than a traditional wedding. Below, you’ll find the pros, cons, and what to expect to help you decide if it’s right for you.

You'll Have Less Control Over Some of the Details
Don’t worry—you’ll still make all the important decisions. But unlike a local wedding, you won’t be meeting with each vendor face-to-face in the months leading up to your big day.
The good news? The resorts I work with have experienced on-site wedding coordinators who will guide you through the planning process when the time comes. Once your date and venue are booked, you'll have plenty of time to dream and gather inspiration—and then you'll work directly with the resort team to bring everything together.

Your Guest List Will Likely Be Smaller
This can be a pro or a con, depending on how you look at it.
A destination wedding is a great way to keep things intimate—and avoid the pressure of inviting every distant relative or coworker. But travel logistics may mean that a few people close to you won't be able to attend.
Some couples choose to plan a relaxed get-together back home afterward to celebrate with anyone special who couldn't make the trip.

It Might Be More Affordable Than You Think
Surprised? You’re not alone.
Fewer guests often means lower overall costs. And with a picture-perfect tropical setting, you won’t need to spend big on décor or florals.
Some of my favorite resort partners even offer complimentary wedding packages—yes, really! If you're curious about what's typically included, this post I wrote about destination wedding packages breaks it all down.
And if you want to get a better idea of overall pricing, this post I wrote on how much a destination wedding actually costs is a great place to start.

The Dress Code Is Usually More Relaxed
With warmer weather and a beachy vibe, most couples and guests opt for lighter, more comfortable attire.
You can absolutely go for a semi-formal look if that's your style, but you don't typically see a lot of tuxedos or ballgowns at all-inclusive resorts. Think breezy fabrics and outfits that still feel elevated without being overly formal.

You'll Get More Time With Your Guests
Ask any couple who's had a traditional wedding, and their biggest regret is usually that their day went by too fast. It was a big blur, and they didn’t get much quality time with the people they love.
A destination wedding gives you several days (not just a few hours) to enjoy time with your favorite people—whether that's lounging by the pool, going on an excursion, or hanging out at a welcome party or beach bonfire.
And when the big day arrives? You're not rushing from one thing to the next—you actually get to be present and celebrate with your guests. It's truly about making memories together, not just celebrating for one night.

It's Just More Fun
Your wedding becomes a vacation for your guests, too—which makes the whole experience more exciting and memorable.
Let’s be honest: a beachside ceremony followed by cocktails at sunset sounds a little more appealing than a banquet hall in your hometown, right?

You'll Say "I Do" in a Breathtaking Location
Whether you picture soft white sand, tropical gardens, a rooftop with an ocean view, or something totally unique, there’s a destination wedding venue out there that fits your style.
Not only will the setting be gorgeous, but it’ll make your photos (and memories) that much more special.

Your Honeymoon Starts Right Away
No need to pack your bags or catch a flight the next morning—you’re already in paradise! Once you tie the knot, it’s time to kick off the honeymoon and soak in that just-married bliss.
Feeling like a destination wedding is right for you, but not sure what the next step is now?
Figuring out which resort fits your vibe, how to set up a room block, and what your guests need travel-wise can get overwhelming fast—but that’s exactly what I’m here to help with.
You’ve got two simple ways to get started:
